Membership
The Faculty of Liturgical Musicians maintains the following degrees of membership:
Associate -- AFLM -- Intended for church musicians of roughly undergraduate / accomplished amateur ability. Assessment is primarily via written evidence, including the candidate’s résumé, testimonials from senior colleagues and/or clergy, and an extended piece of writing detailing their involvement in church music and reflecting upon their practice. It may also include recordings or the scores of original compositions.
Fellow -- FFLM -- Intended for liturgical musicians of professional standard and assessed at approximately the level of a taught master’s degree. Candidates will usually hold a relevant first degree or a diploma of graduate level. Similar written evidence is required as for Associateship, but audio or video recordings of performances must be supplied, demonstrating the broad range of the candidate’s professional accomplishment as a church musician. In the case of composers, scores must also be supplied, along with evidence that these have been performed.
Senior Fellow -- SFFLM -- An elite award, representing an eminent standard of professional accomplishment as a church musician, broadly equivalent to doctoral level. It is likely individuals will be brought to the attention of the Faculty Council by a musician's colleagues. Self-nomination is not precluded.
All of the above awards may be granted honoris causa, in the case of eminent persons who are not primarily musicians but have rendered outstanding service of some sort. Awards, ad honorem, for musicians, may also be granted to reward distinguished service. Awards can also be made ad eundem gradum in the case of those whose musical abilities are well enough known to the Faculty Officers such as to render formal examination unnecessary.
Past members of the FLM, under the old regulations, may choose to reapply for membership. If reconfirmed, they will be placed in the grade of their prior FLM membership.
There is a fairly simple fee structure in place for the assessment of new (non-legacy) applicants and for the issuance of FLM diplomas in hard copy (in addition to a PDF). Details are contained on the membership application form. Fees do not apply to honoris causa awards or to awards made ad eundem gradum.
